Many of our books are published in other countries, and as we are based in England, we are taking the liberty of describing anything outside the United Kingdom as ‘foreign’! For various reasons (such as literary agents withholding rights), publishers do not always have the rights to sell particular books across the globe. One example is our Little Book of Egyptian Hieroglyphs, which was never published in the US. On the other hand, three of our books (Handbook to Life in Ancient Rome, Handbook to Life in Ancient Greece and Dictionary of Roman Religion) were written for the New York-based publisher Facts On File, who themselves export to foreign territories like the UK.
Foreign English
Some of our books that are published in the UK and Commonwealth have a different publishing house in the United States and even a different title. Trafalgar: The Biography of a Battle was published by Little, Brown in the UK (and by their imprint Abacus for the paperback), but in the US it was published by Viking Penguin (and as Penguin for the paperback) under the title Nelson’s Trafalgar: The Battle that Changed the World. Our book Eavesdropping on Jane Austen’s England was published in the US as Jane Austen’s England.
Foreign Translations
Several of our books have been translated into foreign languages, seventeen so far, though it is impossible to know in how many individual countries our books are sold. Many publishers use the same jacket design as the English-language one – that was certainly the case with many of the foreign editions of The Keys of Egypt. Some different jackets are illustrated here, and further details about the various foreign editions, along with book jackets, are given on the individual website pages for each of our books.
New Rights
If you are a foreign publisher or scout and are interested in any of our books, please contact us direct. For When There Were Birds, for Gibraltar: The Greatest Siege in British History and for Eavesdropping on Jane Austen’s England, foreign translation rights and all other rights are being handled by the publishers Little, Brown Book Group, Carmelite House, 50 Victoria Embankment, London EC4Y 0DZ, website www.littlebrown.co.uk.
